What are the best places to go skiing in 2026?

Pick by what matters most to you: Alta, Utah for snow, Whistler Blackcomb for sheer size and Jackson Hole for vertical, with Palisades Tahoe, Killington and Niseko United covering California, the Northeast and Japan. If you want turns before 2027, Vail Resorts scheduled Keystone to open as soon as possible in October, and both Breckenridge (Epic) and Copper Mountain (Ikon) list November 6, 2026. Each pick below comes with the pass that gets you in and the resort's own numbers.

No list can rank ski resorts objectively, so every pick here is tied to one stated criterion: snow, terrain, access, pass or cost. Resort figures come from each resort's own website, and pass and opening details come from the 2026-27 announcements of the two big pass operators, Vail Resorts (Epic) and Alterra Mountain Company (Ikon), rather than first-hand use.

Why each place made the list

Alta, Utah: for snow

Alta averages 543 inches of snow a year, the biggest snowfall average among the resorts in this guide that publish one, against 400 inches at Palisades Tahoe and 250 inches of natural snowfall at Killington. Its 2,614 skiable acres and 2,538 vertical feet are served by just five lifts and a transfer tow, and the resort says traversing or hiking to reach parts of the mountain is part of the Alta experience.

Two things to know before you book. First, Alta is skiers-only: it describes itself as one of three ski areas in North America that does not permit snowboards on its lifts, which settles the question for mixed groups. Second, parking: reservations are required Friday through Sunday and on holidays from 8am to 1pm, starting December 11, 2026, and Ikon holders can buy one for $25 (checked October 2026) or ride the UTA Ski Bus for free.

On passes, the 2026-27 Ikon Pass gives 7 days shared between Alta and Snowbird, but the Ikon Base Pass is not valid at Alta. The 2026-27 Mountain Collective Pass adds two days with no blackout dates and half-off additional days, and Ikon holders can buy a friend or family member an Alta day pass at 25% off. Alterra lists Alta's opening for Nov. 20.

Whistler Blackcomb, British Columbia: for size

By Vail Resorts' own description, Whistler and Blackcomb together form the largest ski area in North America at 8,171 acres, with more than 200 runs, 16 alpine bowls and three glaciers. New for 2026-27 is the Showcase Chair, which Vail Resorts says will deliver faster access to Blackcomb's alpine terrain and glacier skiing.

Whistler Blackcomb is a Vail Resorts mountain, and the company lists it among the resorts available on its Epic Pass. Friday, November 20, 2026, is the target opening date, matching the date in Vail Resorts' August opening schedule.

Jackson Hole, Wyoming: for vertical

Jackson Hole says it has the longest continuous vertical rise of any ski area in the U.S., climbing 4,139 feet from the valley floor to the top of Rendezvous Mountain. The resort's own introduction leads with its Aerial Tram and Corbet's Couloir. The vertical is why it is here: if long, sustained descents are what you travel for, this is the pick.

It is an Ikon destination (Alterra lists "Jackson Hole Mountain Resort in Wyoming"), and Alterra has it opening on Nov. 27.

Palisades Tahoe, California: for big snow near an airport

Palisades Tahoe's statistics page puts the resort 42 miles from Reno, 96 miles from Sacramento and 196 miles from San Francisco via Interstate 80, which makes it a short drive for anyone flying into Reno. Each of its two mountains lists an average annual snowfall of 400 inches, and together Palisades and Alpine count 6,000 skiable acres served by 39 lifts, including a 110-person tram.

The resort lists its winter season as November through May, and its monthly averages show December at 123 inches. Palisades Tahoe is on the Ikon Pass, and Alterra lists Nov. 25 as its opening date.

Killington, Vermont: for the Northeast

For skiers based in the Northeast, Killington is the big-mountain option on this list. The resort counts 1,509 skiable acres on its own, 1,977 combined with Pico Mountain, and a 3,050-foot vertical drop; Killington Peak, its summit, is Vermont's second-highest at 4,241 feet.

Killington says it gets 250 inches of natural snowfall each winter and that its snowmaking system covers 600 of its skiable acres. Its monthly averages build through the winter, from 52 inches in January to 55 in February and a peak of 57 inches in March, which makes it a sound pick for a late-season trip. It is an Ikon resort; Alterra's September list still shows its opening date as to be announced.

Niseko United, Japan: for powder

Niseko United reported a 2025-26 season total of 13.5m / 44ft of snowfall with fresh snow on 80 days, and called that season on par with recent winters. Note that this is one season's total, not a long-run average.

Timing matters. Last season started slowly, with the resort opening on December 4, and January alone accounted for more than half the season's total. The resort says it expects consistent snowfall from December through March again. Niseko United is on Alterra's Ikon destination list, which has Hanazono Niseko, Niseko Annupuri, Niseko Grand Hirafu and Niseko Village opening on Nov. 28.

Colorado's early openers: for skiing before 2027

Vail Resorts' August 18 schedule put Keystone first, opening as soon as possible in October, with the resort hoping to be the first to open in North America for the second year running; Breckenridge followed on November 6 and Vail Mountain on November 13. On the Ikon side, Alterra lists Copper Mountain for Nov. 6. Vail Resorts notes that opening dates are subject to change based on weather and conditions, so treat every early date as a target.

How to choose between them

Snow. Compare each resort with its own record rather than with its neighbors, because these resorts report snowfall in different ways: Alta and Palisades publish annual averages, Killington a natural-snowfall figure and Niseko United a season total. Once you are there, knowing how to read the morning snow report tells you which mornings deserve the early alarm.

Terrain. Decide what kind of big you want. Whistler Blackcomb and Palisades Tahoe are about acreage, Jackson Hole is about vertical, and Alta trades size for snow, with five lifts serving its terrain.

Access. Palisades is the drive-from-the-airport option, Alta asks for weekend parking reservations or a bus ride, and Niseko means a long-haul flight to Hokkaido.

Pass and cost. Most of these picks sit on Ikon; Whistler Blackcomb and the Vail Resorts mountains in Colorado sit on Epic, and Alta also takes the Mountain Collective Pass. This page prints no lift-ticket prices; if you already hold a pass, check it against this list before anything else. If you have not bought one yet, our Epic vs. Ikon breakdown works through the choice by pass structure rather than by resort logo.

Packing for the trip

A destination trip is also a gear-logistics problem. If you are flying with your own boots, a dedicated boot bag keeps boots, helmet and layers in one carry; Dakine's Boot Locker is one option: Check price on Amazon. Early-season chairlifts in November can be bitter, so a box of air-activated hand warmers is worth packing: Check price on Amazon. For a week of ski days, pack more ski socks than you think you need; Darn Tough's over-the-calf ski socks are one pair to consider: Check price on Amazon.

Short early-season days reward an early start, so our first-chair routine is worth a read before you go. For the rest of the kit, see our full shortlist.

FAQ

Which ski resort opens first for the 2026-27 season?

In North America, Vail Resorts' schedule had Keystone opening as soon as possible in October, followed by Breckenridge and Copper Mountain on Nov. 6. In Europe, Alterra lists Zermatt on Nov. 1. All of these dates depend on weather and conditions.

Can snowboarders ride at Alta?

No. Alta is a skiers-only mountain and does not allow snowboards on its lifts, so a group that includes snowboarders needs a different base.

Which pass covers these resorts?

Alterra's 2026-27 list includes Alta, Jackson Hole, Palisades Tahoe, Killington, Niseko United and Copper Mountain as Ikon destinations. Vail Resorts lists Whistler Blackcomb on its Epic Pass, and Keystone, Breckenridge and Vail Mountain are in its own opening lineup.

When is the best time to ski Niseko?

Niseko United's own recap says January delivered more than half of last season's snowfall after a slow December, and the resort expects consistent snowfall from December through March, so mid-winter is the window its own numbers point to.

What is the largest ski resort in North America?

Vail Resorts describes Whistler Blackcomb as the largest ski area in North America, at 8,171 acres with more than 200 runs.
